And Tyler Too: A Biography of John & Julia Gardiner Tyler, by Robert Seager II (copyright 1963). This edition is a part of the Library of the Presidents series from Easton Press. This book, which is available from the publisher only by subscription to the series, is in excellent condition.
Easton Press volumes are among the most beautiful and durable books available today. Each volume is bound in genuine leather with a hubbed spine and accented with 22-karat gold, and printed on acid-neutral paper. The Smyth-sewn pages have gilded edges and are complemented by a sewn-in satin ribbon page marker and distinctive endleaves.
John Tyler was the first Vice President to attain the Presidency as a result of his predecessor’s death, William Henry Harrison having died in office only a month after his 1841 inauguration. And at the time Tyler, at fifty-one, was also the youngest man ever to become President.
Seager’s biography admirably brings out Tyler’s character and personality, deals entertainingly with his romance with Julia, and covers both families, the New York Gardiners as well as the Virginia Tylers. The book’s title, of course, derives from the slogan – “Tippecanoe and Tyler too” – that helped Harrison, the hero of the Battle of Tippecanoe, win the Presidency. The N. Y. Times described the book as “essentially the history of two important families, fascinating in its accurate minutiae.”
