Description

The Great War by British military historian Cyril Falls (copyright 1959). This edition (copyright 1987) is part of The Library of Military History series from Easton Press. This book, which is no longer available from the publisher, is in very good condition.
Easton Press volumes are among the most beautiful and durable books available today. Each volume is bound in genuine leather with a hubbed spine and accented with 22-karat gold, and printed on acid-neutral paper. The Smyth-sewn pages have gilded edges and are complemented by a sewn-in satin ribbon page marker and distinctive endleaves.
The Great War examines the generalship of the leading soldiers in the First World War. More than any other war, the First World War was under the firm control of the soldiers themselves. From the moment the ultimatums were exchanged in August of 1914, the civilian powers all across Europe turned everything over to the generals. To a very large extent, the generals acted as they saw fit, with a minimum of interference by emperor, king, prime minister or parliament. This was a soldier’s fight.
In substantial detail, Falls studies the battles and campaigns in which the generals played their parts and, in doing so, offers a solid, thoughtful, informed analysis of the war in strictly professional terms.
